Such a Night : The Stellar Nashville Sessions, 1960 - 1964 is the sixth volume in RCA's ongoing Essential Elvis series. Like its predecessors, it gives a behind-the-scenes look at a group of Elvis Presley recording sessions. With the exception of the title track, 'Such a Night' is comprised of alternate takes and gives us an opportunity to explore Elvis Presley's creative process. The subtle difference between the alternate take and the released version, plus the in-studio banter, offer a fascinating view of how Elvis made music. All tracks were recorded at the legendary RCA Nashville Studio B, with the 'Nashville Sound' was all but invented.

RCA has often been criticized for repetitive and poorly annotated Elvis reissues. Things have gotten much more interesting, thanks to imaginative projects such as the ongoing Essential Elvis series; Such a Night is the sixth title in the string. Between 1960 (when he left the army) and '64, Presley spent 11 nights cutting 81 masters in Nashville. Those tracks were later spread out across albums, singles, and compilations. The original masters of 50 of those tunes (some of which are heard here in alternate takes) ended up on the Top 100 charts. Fifteen went gold and six made it to platinum. For Such a Night, producers Ernst Michael Jorgensen and Roger Semon assembled 19 alternate takes and the master take of the title cut into what could have been a Presley album from the period. The result is an astonishing glimpse into one of the artist's legendary all-night recording marathons. While Presley fans will swoon, this is no collectors-only disc. He literally nails every tune here. Snatches of studio patter add atmosphere. And while some of the material is dated, the rockin' "Little Sister" and a killer version of the Little Willie John hit "Fever" are as fresh today as when they were recorded. Actually, taking into account the improved mix heard here, they're probably fresher.

FTD Records 2-CD version of Elvis is Back! in the customary 7" format. There is a very limited number of previously unreleased outtakes on the studio album, hence the 2CD solution – combining all previously released versions – masters and outtakes.

The tracks are presented in blocks: the album, the singles, first takes, March sessions and April sessions.

Elvis Is Back! ..... Elvis returned to Nashville's Studio B on March 20th 1960, just 15 days after coming home from his army stint for Uncle Sam. Elvis had been away from the music scene for nearly 2 years and the charts were no longer full of the excitement of fifties Rock 'n' Roll but had given way to a smoother sixties sound. Elvis knew too well that just one year out of the music business can kill your career and, although he had made some home recordings while in Germany, Elvis hadn't recorded in a Studio since June 1958!

While 1968 is named as Elvis' 'Comeback' nothing could have been more important than this 1960 session & no one could have been more concerned than Elvis himself. Would he still be as important to his teenage fans now that he was 25 years old? Could he still select suitable hit material in this new decade? Would his new sound even be relevant?

Of course, Elvis always rose to a challenge and tended to produce his best work under pressure. When the session finished there could be no doubt that from his explosive first recording 'Make Me Know It' to the very last moment, as dawn was breaking, 'Reconsider Baby' this might be the best music that Elvis would ever produce.

In an amazing two nights work Elvis recorded eighteen classic tracks including seven Gold records!

When the LP was originally released surprisingly it did not sell as well as expected, and GI Blues would sadly do better. However, had it included the mega-selling Hit singles recorded at the same session (Stuck On You, It's Now or Never, Are You Lonesome Tonight) there is no doubt that it would have sold multi-millions. Now, at last, this upgraded CD features the original 12 LP tracks as well as the 6 songs chosen for singles and every track is sublime.

From the exciting feel of Elvis blasting away that Army despondency on his first recording 'Make Me Know It', to the beautiful pop of 'Girl of My Best Friend' & 'A Mess Of Blues', the pure musical genius of the blues of 'Like a Baby' & 'It Feels So Right' along with the emotion in the ballad 'Soldier Boy' - Elvis covered every musical style.

While the Gold singles are well-known, two LP tracks also stand out as some of Elvis' most important recordings of all-time. 'Reconsider Baby', recorded in one magnificent live-take, captures Elvis as he is consumed in the passion of the music and working with such a great band. The wailing sax of Boots Randolph combined with Elvis' intense vocal is hard to beat. Similarly Elvis' growling moan of 'Such A Night' pushed this lightweight Drifters' song into another league all together. Here the new idea of using dual drummers (Buddy Harman & DJ Fontana) never would be bettered, helping urge Elvis an awe-inspiring performance. While Elvis was never recognised as a song-writer, his all-important contribution as an arranger/producer is perfectly demonstrated here. Elvis' whoop of joy at the end really says it all!

This was a very different sound to the Elvis of the fifties, smoother, more mature and with a new beauty and strength to his voice.

This was a powerful statement that no one could deny – 'Elvis Is Back!'

This is a soundtrack to the documentary "Elvis That's the Way It Is." The album was a modest hit when it was released in 1970 peaking at 21 on the US album chart (number 8 on the US Country chart) and 12 in the UK. It would be certified GOLD by the RIAA. The documentary covered Elvis' concerts in Las Vegas. It includes both live recordings from the show and "studio rehearsal" recordings. It includes the US hit single "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" and the UK hit single "I Just Can't Help Believin'". While it is a little lite on the number of songs included (it is just a reissue of the LP) it is still an excellent collection and a must for Elvis fans. Elvis is in top form for these recordings.

Elvis Presley - The Pearl Harbour Show March 25,1961

One of the best early Elvis live performances ever released, albeit with a bad sound recording, but just listen to that crowd - magical! This is Elvis fresh from his demob from the US Army and right at the very start of a new era of music being fully supported by legends in their own right - The Jordanaires, Scotty Moore, D.J. Fontana, Hank Garland, Boots Randolph, Bob Moore and Floyd Cramer. The setting for this show was Honolulu and the cause was a good one as it was a benefit performance in aid of the Pearl Harbour victims. It's great to hear live versions of 'All Shook Up', ''Reconsider Baby', 'One Night', 'It's Now Or Never' and a rarity in the form of 'Swing Down Sweet Chariot', from this particular time.
The band in 1961, whom Elvis introduces on the record, are Hank Garland (guitar), Bobby Moore (bass), D.J. Fontana (drums), Scotty Moore (guitar), Floyd Cramer (piano) and Boots Randolph (sax). The Jordanaires provide "vocal accompaniment."

- The Story -

The Honolulu benefit had appeared on vinyl bootlegs during the 1970s, but never sounding this good - there are still a few momentary drop-outs, and the noise of the screaming girls on the first numbers does suppress the music slightly (if George Martin could have heard this tape, it would have warned him of what he was in for in trying to record the Beatles in concert); but this is also about as idealized an early Elvis Presley live performance as we're ever likely to hear, backed not only by two of his original Sun Records bandmates (Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana), but also by most of his great Nashville studio band (Hank "Sugarfoot" Garland, Floyd Cramer, and Boots Randolph). What's more, Elvis is remarkably relaxed here, joking with the crowd as he ranges across his entire career up to that point, from "That's All Right" to "It's Now or Never." The combination of the inevitable sound leakages, a few flubbed lines (on "One Night"), and Colonel Tom Parker's neglect of the musical side of Elvis' career precluded this show - Elvis' last before a paying audience until 1969 - from ever being released on its own. It makes for a fascinating snapshot of the King as he was metamorphosing musically from the young, lean, raw rock & roller into a mature, sophisticated (and genuinely great) singer.

Quote:On March 25, 1961, Elvis Presley made his first post-Army appearance, and he did it for the Navy. Presley performed in a charity fund-raiser at Bloch Arena to kick-start the struggling USS Arizona Memorial building fund. It is an event largely unremembered and unmemorialized, even though a rock 'n' roll entertainer was able to accomplish something that admirals, generals and politicians could not. More than a thousand U.S. sailors were entombed in the battleship when a bomb ripped apart the bow, splitting the hull. It sank in minutes and the bodies were never recovered. Dozens of plans were proposed to memorialize the crew of the Arizona, the U.S. Navy's single greatest loss of life, but for nearly 20 years military efforts at raising funds were fumbling and disorganized. There was also no agreement on the size and shape of the memorial. Eventually, a design by architect Alfred Preis was accepted, even though the Navy had asked for a memorial shaped like a ship's "bridge" and Preis' design was like a bridge crossing a river. Although the U.S. Navy insisted on complete control of the Arizona Memorial, they had no experience in creating such structures. The Navy's fund-raising was confused, and ineffective, even when they hired civilians to do it for them. Hawaii journalists appealed to other newspapers to help.
George Chaplin of the Honolulu Advertiser mailed something like 1,500 letters, asking
for articles or editorials about the Arizona Memorial. The Los Angeles Examiner responded with an editorial, and one of their readers that day was Elvis Presley's manager, Col. Tom Parker. "The colonel
read in an L.A. newspaper that the memorial-building project was not going to be finished," recalled radio personality and concert promoter "Uncle Tom" Moffatt, a friend of Parker's. According to Ron Jacobs, another KPOI "Poi-Boy" disc jockey at the time, "Parker, a veteran of World War I, served in the U. S. Army at Fort DeRussy in Waikiki and loved Hawaii. "Elvis did his first concerts here in November 1957 at the Honolulu Stadium. That is when Tom Moffatt and I met Elvis and Col. Parker. We were disc jockeys and the first ones to play Elvis' records. Colonel invited us to emcee one concert each. That remains one of the most exciting experiences of my life." The benefit was also an opportunity for Presley to ease back into playing for a live audience. Presley was just getting out of the Army and he hadn't performed for a couple of years. Presley also wanted to do something patriotic for his country after serving in the military. "Chaplin was a veteran of World War II who served on the staff of The Stars and Stripes, the official U. S. military paper," said Jacobs. "Several other Stars staff members were discharged in Honolulu and joined Chaplin." USS Arizona Memorial historian Dan Martinez credits newspapers for keeping the memorial concept alive. "Editors of daily newspapers across the country were connected in their profession, that was how they kept the story going. "Parker and Elvis had to go to Hawaii anyway, to film a movie they thought would be called 'Waikiki Beachboy' (it turned out to be "Blue Hawaii"), so Parker thought it would be good publicity to schedule the benefit concert that would raise well over $64,000 for the memorial.
"But the memorial needed half a million dollars. The total already raised at that time was $250,000, which was only half of what they needed. Federal money was eventually taken to finish the memorial, which means that half the money that was raised later came from the taxpayers," said Martinez. But before the concert could go on, Parker had to convince "the brass," admirals, generals, etc., that a benefit concert would actually be profitable. The military officers were skeptical, said Moffatt. Moffatt went with Col. Parker to "see the reaction" of the officers. "It was still the early days of rock 'n' roll, which conservative people still thought of as wild music. But Col. Parker was such a great salesman that by the end of the meeting, the colonel had the brass saluting him," Moffatt recalled. Jacobs also remembers the summit meeting. "Moffatt and I were on hand when Parker briefed the highest military in the Pacific. Although he was an 'Honorary Colonel' from the state of Tennessee he had the authentic generals and admirals hypnotized when he spoke. As the officers left, they were each given a photo of Elvis. They had to restrain themselves from looking like excited fans." "Our sincere thanks to Col. Parker," said Pacific War Memorial fund-raising chief H. Tucker Gratz afterward to the press. "It's hard to believe this is real." "It is," said Parker. "You know, Elvis is 26. This last Sunday was his birthday and that's about the average age of those boys entombed in the Arizona. I think it's appropriate that he should be doing this." Star-Bulletin columnist Dave Donnelly was a news editor at KPOI when he happened onto the interview among Moffatt, Jacobs and Parker announcing the concert. "Col. Parker waved his hands at all these kids who were sitting in the studio and said, 'You're all invited too,' and they were. He bought their tickets," Donnelly said. The concert was scheduled for Mar. 25, 1961, in the Bloch Arena next to the Pearl Harbor entrance. The goal of $50,000 was topped by almost $15,000. Tickets were sold at stores like Sears, for a top price of $5. The concert not only raised money, it also raised public awareness of the need for a memorial. All funds raised went into planning and building the Arizona Memorial; Elvis wasn't paid his usual fee of $25,000. "I don't believe in part-time charities," said Col. Parker. "Elvis will not receive a cent for his evening's work." "Parker believed that if you did a fund-raising concert that all the money made, every penny of it, went to the cause," Moffatt explained. Even Elvis purchased tickets. Col. Parker and the admirals bought tickets to the show to increase the total amount raised. "The colonel made sure that absolutely no one got in the show for free," Moffatt said. Many $100 tickets were sold, and Presley bought the first one.
The show was memorable. "Because it was a small indoor hall, the screaming and cheering was louder than the 1957 outdoor shows. It was literally a situation where you couldn't hear yourself think," Jacobs said. "On the night of the show there was the electricity and excitement that was felt only at Elvis concerts. I have attended many concerts. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, 'N Synch, etc., never generated the highly charged audience reaction that Elvis did. "I was amazed at how much music such a small group of performers could generate. Elvis' onstage moves, which have since been widely copied, captured visually what his music sounded like. To me, the most exciting moment was when Elvis ended his smash-hit song 'Hound Dog' by landing on both his knees and skidding at least 6 feet across the stage. "Minnie Pearl, a comedy 'hillbilly' singer and star of 'The Grand Ol' Opry' radio and TV show received 'special guest' billing. Parker brought Elvis' complete road show and touring band. They were most of the original musicians and singers on Elvis' first records: D.J. Fontana on drums, Scotty Moore on guitar and the Jordanaires as backup singers."
There had never before been a high-profile fund-raising concert -- especially not one by a rock 'n' roll performer. Despite this contribution, there is no mention of Presley's special concert at the Arizona memorial itself or at the visitors' center. There is only one plaque at the memorial that mentions Presley as just one of the many contributors to the building of the Arizona Memorial. Elvis Presley merchandise and artifacts are viewable only within the archives at the memorial. None of it is on public display. "Moffatt and I remained friends with Col. Parker until he died several years ago," Jacobs said. "His biggest disappointment was that Elvis never received official government credit for this contribution to Hawaii, the country and the world.

The album Review
Possibly due to the retro, irony-filled vogue for easy listening giants like Burt Bacharach and -- to a lesser extent -- roots pop figures like Glen Campbell and Neil Diamond, Elvis Presley's Vegas-era recordings have been given new life after a cruel stretch of put downs by kitsch-wary critics. The praise is not just so much posing, though, since many of Elvis' live albums from this period, in particular, contain a substantial store of quality material -- dinner-show horn charts, strings, grandstanding vocals, and all. This 1970 offering from Las Vegas proves to be one of his best (it's actually the soundtrack to Denis Sanders' documentary of Elvis' summer run at the International Hotel). Acting on his affinity for country-pop figures like Campbell and Mac Davis, Elvis especially shines on the slow to mid-tempo ballads "I Just Can't Help Believin'" and "Just Pretend" (both seamless blends of torch song glitz and contemporary rock elements). And to provide the requisite amount of sweat for those nightly towel giveaways, the King works out extra hard on showstoppers like "Patch It Up" and "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me." Elvis Presley - Great Country Songs

Great Country Songs compiles 24 of the finest country songs Elvis Presley recorded between 1955 and 1976, from "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" to "Guitar Man." Many familiar performances are available, as are five previously unreleased tracks designed to bait collectors, and the collection does a good job of establishing Elvis' credentials as a country singer, even if it isn't as effective as the blues collection, Reconsider Baby.

This cracking CD focuses on some of Elvis' country music. Covering a lot of the country music that he recorded, this is definately one of the finest Elvis Cds available.Many of the songs will be familiar, and have been released before. But the half-dozen alternate takes make this a very worthy purchase.The selling point here is a stunning alternate take of Kris Krisstofferson's "Help Me Make It Through The Night" that betters Elvis' master take from the "Elvis Now" album.The "Guitar Man" remake/remix from 1980 is here also, plus almost every track being utterly sensational, especially the final studio track that Elvis ever cut, "He'll Have To Go", you know, the Jim Reeves song. What Elvis does with this country standard is sensational, as he moulds it into a long, slow blues with especially excellent guitar work from James Burton.Like I said, this is a tremendous CD, especially if you like country music.

A uniformly strong selection of songs and cleaner-than-usual production make TODAY one of Elvis Presley's better '70s studio efforts. From its opening track "T-R-O-U-B-L-E" (later a hit for Travis Tritt), TODAY announces that it is not just another collection of regret-filled ballads from the King. Sure, there are a few torch songs here, but on TODAY the tear-jerkers are balanced out by such up-tempo numbers as "Susan When She Tried," the inspirational "Shake A Hand," and a cover of the Billy Swan hit "I Can Help. On other tracks, Presley transforms the Pointer Sisters' hit "Fairytale" into a two-step and belts out a Tom Jones-like version of the death-row weeper "Green, Green Grass of Home." Throughout, Elvis' crack band sparkles, with guitarist James Burton in particularly fine form. Don't let the nearly identical covers RCA slapped on Presley's Seventies albums fool you: not all Elvis albums from this era are the same. Each has something to recommend it, but TODAY has more than the standard share of highlights.

Elvis Presley was and is an American icon, a figure whose impact on the pop music world cannot be overestimated. Before he became a legend, Presley was just a singer, albeit one who got the goods by synthesizing the music of his youth: blues, country music, mainstream pop (Dean Martin was an early favorite of his) and gospel. Southern gospel is a intensely rhythmic devotional music, and that obviously left a powerful impression on the young Elvis (he often sang gospel tunes to warm-up for recording session and concerts).

This box set exclusively collects the gospel songs, old and (then) new, Presley recorded throughout his career, including the "Million Dollar Quartet" session (Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash). This collection is wildly varied: the relaxed, party-like informality of the Quartet session (it was not originally intended for release) and the glossy orchestrated pop of "Only Believe" seem to be poles apart, yet the common ground is the conviction Presley brings to these performances. Other high points: the almost Baroque choral touches on a gently loping take of Johnny Cash's "A Thing Called Love," the spare, haunting "I Asked the Lord," and the near-operatic wail of "Reach Out to Jesus."
