Lucky Luxury
Цитата:
A veteran of the US ska scene, L.L. served as the guitarist for the highly regarded instrumental ska/reggae group The Secondhands, and its vocal off-shoot that came in the form of Brent Berry & The Roots Crew, later providing guitar work for The Shop, another 60's ska and reggae group that in typical ‘show band’ fashion focused on the choicest cuts from Jamaican producers of vintage stature.

Release Date: November 7, 2015. Label: Lucky Luxury. Total Length: 43:14. The recording of this album was actually completed roughly 6 years ago. Why L.L. has kept it so tightly tucked under his hat for that long is anybody’s guess (I certainly couldn't get it out of him). But that’s the cool thing about music revivalists; if they do their job well, there should be a timelessness involved regardless of when the record hits the streets. This shines through unequivocally on the present recording. Lucky Luxury has formulated a record that would be equally likely to pump through some massive speakers in a ’69 Brixton shebeen as it would be on the hi-fi system of a ’59 San Fernando Valley bachelor pad. This timelessness isn’t limited to the musical styles represented or the gloriously lo-fi sound quality of the record either (which seems to even share some sonic characteristics with a 1940’s Savoy recording). It permeates through the lyrical subject matter as well. The lyrics to the rousing calypso number, ‘The Sneak’ tell the tale of less-than-trustworthy female counterpart; a situation much older than even the Trinidadian calypso that inspired it. The struggle for mankind to balance their innate desire for both freedom and security that comes across in ‘Camp for the Night’ and ‘Condemned to Freedom’ has been tackled by any philosopher from the empiricist or rationalist school that anyone could name. So all you roots music enthusiasts open your ears, and get ready for a very special record, as Lucky Luxury goes SKA!

Release Date: December 28, 2021. Label: Eric Johnson Music. Total Length: 46:54. It's been a while!...and it actually seems even longer than that. The six years that have passed since the release of L.L's last full-length album of original material (2015's "...Goes SKA!") have provided ample opportunities for all of humanity to meditate on what makes our shared human experience equal-parts meaningful and absurd, steadfast and wary, hopeful and unsalvageable. Artists tend to thrive in these moments of perplexing sociocultural free-fall, or at the very least are willing to allow their works to exhibit an acute awareness of it...to not do so couldn't help but feel irresponsible and dishonest. This offering from Lucky Luxury is no exception. The lyrical content this time around bears a distinct urgency, as though it could only have been manifested amidst an extraordinarily confusing time in human history. The musical palate of this record has expanded quite a bit as well when compared to his last full-length. While vintage ska and reggae remain the heartbeat of this record as a whole, this heartbeat is vitally pumping blood into other beloved atom-age genres like surf, garage, rockabilly, lounge, and otherwise. Change is not so much as "good" or "bad" as it is necessary and wholly inevitable. So come along! Come prepared, and join Lucky Luxury, as he goes elsewhere!
