'Woyzeck & the Tiger Lillies' contains 12 songs from the hit show running in Vienna from 24 September - 15 October. The Tiger Lillies tell the story of Franz Woyzeck, a lowly soldier stationed in a provincial German town. His wife is cheating, his superior officers consider him less than human and his doctor is performing medical experiments on him. He begins to experience a series of apocalyptic visions while his jealous suspicions grow. Things do not end well. The production of Woyzeck and the Tiger Lilies was performed in Vienna 24 September - 15 October 2011 and this cd features the songs from the show. Recorded with Christian Kolonovits and a 10 piece brass band, the 12 songs follow Woyzecks descent into madness.

In the new year The Tiger Lillies will premiere a new show 'Lulu - A Murder Ballad' which will tour in the UK. Inspired by the classic film Pandora's Box (starring Louise Brooks) and Berg's opera Lulu, the show features a whole new cycle of songs, stunning virtual sets by Mark Holthusen (who also created The Ancient Mariner with the band) and is produced by Opera North. Please check the TOUR section of the site for the dates. A CD of the music will be released in conjunction with the premiere of the show.
The songs of Lulu – A Murder Ballad come from the verses written by Frank Wedekind.
It is not a happy or a nice story. Lulu is abused by all her lovers: Shunning, Goll, Schwartz, Alva; and Shig encourages this abuse. Her final lover, Jack, ends her short life, liberating her from the squalid hypocrisy of all of them.
Frank Wedekind, the writer of the original Lulu, was born in Hanover in 1864. His first play, Spring Awakening, was banned in Germany for its graphic portrayal of abortion, homosexuality, child abuse and suicide. His bohemian lifestyle and political activism on the Left brought him into contact with many of the leading artistic and philosophical figures of his time.
He wrote the first Lulu play, Earth Spirit, in 1898 and the second, Pandora’s Box, in 1905. In an early staging of Pandora’s Box Lulu was played by the young Austrian actress Tilly Newes, with Wedekind himself as Jack.
